From the Desk of Candace Winker: Summer Update

winkler_candace_1_webSince its inception in 1962, the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara has held close the belief that a college degree can change the trajectory of an individual’s life. With community partners like you at our side, we have steadily focused on helping students pursue their dreams and reach their fullest potential.

Together we crossed a significant milestone this year – we have cumulatively awarded over $100 million in financial support. We are the first community-based scholarship provider in the nation to reach this level of giving. Even more impressive and meaningful are the over 47,000 students who have been encouraged and inspired by you and others in our community. It is the students – all with their own stories and reasons for wanting to earn a post-secondary degree – who send a chill up my spine.

Students like Gaby Goldberg who worked hard to overcome the obstacles in her life to achieve tremendous success. Bolstered by your support, Gaby will matriculate at Stanford this fall.

Equally moving are the board members, donors, and volunteers who give so generously to help the generations that follow. They are the heart of our community. Donors like Greg and Erika Cooper, who are thankful for the blessings in their lives and choose to give back as part of their legacy.

The Coopers understand that it is in all of our best interests to ensure that students who want to go to college are able to pursue and complete their dreams. According to a recent study from the Public Policy Institute of California, in the next 13 years, California will lack the number of college educated workers to meet the employment needs of tomorrow. In an effort to better reach all of our students, the Scholarship Foundation launched a fully translated website this summer to ensure that native Spanish speakers can access our financial aid resources. The new website compliments the work of our four bilingual Program Advisors who work in every high school and at the sites of our community partners throughout Santa Barbara County.

As the price of a college education continues to soar, the Scholarship Foundation, will continue to look for new ways to reach students, expand our donors and celebrate our student successes. We are proud of our past accomplishments but we will not rest on our laurels. There is too much work to be done. Thank each of you for your support and your partnership.

All My Best,
Candace
